Chertsey Campsite – lovely spot by the river Thames - pity it flooded…
Our Christmas plan went slightly awry – we had a house full with David and Becca, Jen and Scott over Christmas so when Theresa, Wayne and Georgie arrived 2 days after Christmas, we thought we had the perfect solution – Woody! Chertsey is only 9 miles away where Theresa, Wayne and Georgie would be snug and comfy – and our first official guests…
We didn’t factor in the great British weather – well, we had as far as the heating went (on board gas heating plus another electric one) and plenty of duvets, blankets etc. but not the bloody rain! In case you hadn’t noticed, Britain is sinking…fast…
TJ and Wayne kept us posted on the steady rise of the Thames at the campsite and after 2 days, our nerves went and Andrew and I rushed off to rescue Woody – not only did we have to drag him out of there, but find somewhere close by which was available…
In a pair of borrowed wellies (thanks Becca!) off we went – and I have to say, if we can manage to hook up and tow in those conditions (about 6 inches of water all over the campsite) then we are good to go! I meant to take a photo of the ducks swimming past us as we arrived, but seeing them tipped us over the edge and it was a race to get the truck into the right position to hook up before the water rose any further!
The main problem was making sure neither the truck or trailer went onto the soft grass hidden in the murky water – this meant I walked in front of the truck to guide Andrew with lots of hand signals (we really need to make sure BOTH of us know what I mean!) onto dry land…it didn’t actually take long to do but 30 minutes of high level stress at any time is enough for me!
Needless to say, this was a massive relief once we’d got ourselves onto dry land – then off to the new site – on top of a hill another 15 miles away nowhere near any rivers…
